Our special guest on this week’s blog is our founder & owner, Jim Shanley! Jim answered some frequently asked questions to give you a behind the scenes look at the day-to-day on the farm.
How many acres of finger limes do you have?
20 acres!
When did you start the farm?
I purchased our first farm in 1998 and we’ve been growing ever since.
What does an average day look like for a produce farmer?
Every day is a little different on the farm, but we are always keeping an eye on and responding to the plants’ needs. We monitor any stresses, make sure everything is getting enough water, apply fertilizers when needed and manage many types of pest control. We also keep a close eye on timing of harvests for each type of produce we grow, and stay up to date on the produce market as a whole.
What is your favorite part about being a farmer?
My favorite part is hearing from our customers and having people delighted by what they get from us!
What is an unknown fact about farming?
If you have no water, you have no farm
Which produce is the most challenging to grow?
Finger limes are definitely the most challenging. They are difficult to work on and very sensitive to any type of stress.
That’s it for today, Jim has to get back to work outside! Do you have additional questions about the farm? Shoot us a DM on Instagram and we will answer your question in the next edition of “Ask a Farmer”!
